The situation

What has happened

It is 2 pm on a Tuesday and a police escort has arrived in the sally port with a man remanded in custody by Newcastle Local Court this morning. The escort paperwork records his name as Samuel Okonjo, identifier RC-118231, and notes limited English. The remand warrant is in the escort folder. He has a backpack, a phone and some cash. The visiting nurse is available in the reception clinic until 4 pm and a telephone interpreter service can be booked through the Senior Officer. Unit 1 has two beds available. Your Senior Officer expects him placed, screened and inducted before the 5 pm count.

Your brief. Receive Samuel Okonjo into custody in line with the Offender Reception and Induction Procedure. Verify his identity and warrant, process and record his property, complete the at-risk screening with the nurse using an interpreter, deliver the induction in plain language and record the placement decision, so that the 5 pm count and the incoming shift have an accurate record.

What to look for

Evidence guide

Look for a warrant check that identifies the discrepancy planted in the paperwork and escalates it before acceptance, a property entry that is itemised and signed, evidence that the interpreter was used for screening and induction rather than skipped, an accurate observation level and a placement briefing that names the risk. The summary must be factual and in plain language.

The student's evidence summary lists every record they created or changed in the systems named above, their notes and the tasks they ticked. Verify it against the deliverables and your own assessment tool.
