The situation

What has happened

A mobile phone was found in a mattress in Unit 2 cell 14 on 5 September. Since then two intelligence reports from unit officers describe items being passed between cells 11 to 18 on the upper landing after evening lock-in, and a visitor was refused entry on 8 September with tobacco in her shoe. The Security and Intelligence Manager has approved a targeted search of the eight upper landing cells on Thursday morning and asked you to plan and run it under the Cell and Area Search Procedure with a two-officer team drawn from the roster. The search must be recorded cell by cell, including nil finds, and finished before the 11 am program movement.

Your brief. Plan and conduct the targeted search of Unit 2 cells 11 to 18, record every cell and every find correctly in the Contraband and Property Register and the Incident and Use of Force Register, and write a short intelligence summary that tells the manager what the pattern of finds suggests and what to do next.

What to look for

Evidence guide

The plan must show the approval basis, a two-officer team that is accredited and does not leave a post vacant, and the removal and observation arrangement for prisoners. Search records must include nil finds and times. Finds must be bagged, labelled and registered in both systems with the right category. The intelligence summary must separate fact from inference and make specific recommendations.

The student's evidence summary lists every record they created or changed in the systems named above, their notes and the tasks they ticked. Verify it against the deliverables and your own assessment tool.
